CHANGE OF ASSEMBLY’S NAME

Subsequent to the creation and inauguration of Shama District Assembly which hitherto was part of Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (S.A.E.M.A.), the Shama Ahanta East Metropolis is now known as Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (S.T.M.A.) with its head office in Sekondi.

The Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (S.A.E.M.A.) was established by Legislative Instrument 1316 in 1994. Before then, the Assembly was known as Sekondi – Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (S.T.M.A.) which included Shama and Ahanta local councils following the promulgation of PNDC Law 207.

At its last General Assembly meeting in November 5th 2007, the Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly resolved to adopt the name Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (S.T.M.A.) following the creation of Shama District Assembly from the Metropolis.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (S.T.M.A.) is bordered to the East by Shama District Assembly (S.D.A.) at Inchaban just after the Sekondi School for the Deaf, to the West by Ahanta West District Assembly, to the North by Mpohor Wassa East and to the South by the Gulf of Guinea.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly also has forty-four electoral areas and four Sub-Metropolitan District Councils which are coterminous with the constituencies. They are Takoradi, Sekondi, Effia-Kwesimintsim and Essikado-Ketan.

The Assembly is composed of sixty-four Members made up of 44 elected, 15 Government Appointees, 4 Honourable Members of Parliament who are ex-officio members and the Metropolitan Chief Executive.

The Assembly wishes to inform the general public that whilst Management is working hard to change the old name Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (S.A.E.M.A.)  on its properties, stickers, tickets and other relevant documents, such tickets, stickers and documents bearing the name S.A.E.M.A. will still be valid until new ones are produced to replace them.

To this end, management of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly wishes to entreat all Government Departments and Agencies, Businesses, Non-Governmental Organizations, Schools and Individuals using the formal name of the Metropolis (Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly-S.A.E.M.A.) to amend their records to reflect the current name which is Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (S.T.M.A.).
